At the State Board of Education meeting on June 7, Chairman William Harrison stated that North Carolina will be using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) beginning with the 2013-14 school year, assuming that the NGSS standards have been completed and are ready for implementation. At this time the NGSS are on schedule for completion this fall and distribution in early 2013.
In response to this first step toward adopting the NGSS, NCSLA is proud to sponsor Dr. Stephen Pruitt, who is leading the development of the NGSS at Achieve, Inc. Dr. Pruitt will enlighten us in his presentation and afternoon workshop on "Preparing North Carolina for NGSS." After an up-to-date description of where we are with the new standards, Dr. Pruitt will facilitate table discussions immersing us into the structure of the Framework and NGSS draft.
Time will be available for members to network with others in similar positions during a Job-Alike session. Ideas for sharing the message from Dr. Pruitt will be one topic for which members can seek answers and resources.
A reception sponsored by Frye Scientific and a dinner, sponsored by Fisher Science Education follows the professional development session. As an extension of the afternoon topic NCSLA is honored to feature Dr. Patricia Simmons, Retiring President of the National Science Teachers Association and Head of the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education at North Carolina State University. Dr. Simmons will share ideas about "Teaching the E in STEM."
Join us and begin to understand the Next Generation of Science Standards. Full registration details are available online.
