 Our Fall Membership Meeting was held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

1 pm Professional Development Session

Nanoscale science is emerging as one of the hot areas of science and engineering research. Recent developments have resulted in a number of amazing new nanoscale tools and nanotechnology-based consumer products. Join us as we explore how science is different at the nanoscale. Learn about new tools of science that allow researchers to build materials one atom at a time. Find out how you and your teachers can teach about nanotechnology, size and scale from elementary through high school.

6 pm Dinner with the awarding of the 2011 Herman and Emma Gatling Award for Outstanding Science Education Leadership in North Carolina sponsored by Carolina Biological Supply.  

The dinner speaker was be Mike Martin of the NC Department of Public Instruction.  Mr. Martin addressed the status of the Race to the Top in North Carolina and what teachers and schools across the state can expect.  Sponsored by Fisher Scientific Education.

Spring 2011 Membership Meeting

Our spring membership meeting was held Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Embassy Suites in Cary, NC.

12 pm:  NCSLA Luncheon (sponsored by Carolina Biological) and Business Meeting including the induction of new officers, presentation of the Michael C. Jackson Distinguished Service Award and recognition of the NCSLA Science Leadership Fellows.

The luncheon speakers will be Ms. Judy Jones, winner of the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and biology teacher at East Chapel Hill High School. Judy will speak about "Nurturing Student Teachers: The Journey from Trepidation to Competence."


1:30 pm: Professional Development Session

Dr. Charles Coble will present "Redesigning Initial Teacher Preparation Programs" in which he will discuss what teachers need to help ensure the success of their students - and what teacher education programs should do to assure that beginning teachers have these skills in place upon completion of their programs.

cobleDr. Charles R. Coble is regarded as a national expert on teacher education programs and teacher development. He is a former professor of science education and dean of 13 years at the nationally award-winning school of education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He served for six years as the vice president of university-school programs for the 16-campus University of North Carolina (UNC). In that capacity, Dr. Coble led the development of the University-School Teacher Education Partnerships in all UNC teacher-preparation institutions and organized the UNC Center for School Leadership Development—a confederation of high-quality programs for the initial and continuing preparation of teachers and administrators.

Dr. Coble also led the design and construction of an $11 million state-of-the-art professional development center facility that also houses the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy. He has directed more than $12 million in grants and contracts and is the author or coauthor of 10 books and more than 70 published articles. Most recently, Dr. Coble was the vice president of policy studies and programs at the Education Commission of the States. A native of North Carolina, he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from UNC—Chapel Hill. Dr. Coble maintains an active secondary science teaching license in North Carolina.
