gatlingwickliffThe NCSLA Herman and Emma Gatling Award for Outstanding Science Education Leadership in North Carolina goes to the person who has exemplified the high standards that the late Herman Gatling of Durham County set in his job and in his life. This award is sponsored by Carolina Biological.

This award recognizes the recipient as the outstanding science education leader in North Carolina, someone who has gone above and beyond the requirements of the workplace and provided outstanding leadership and service to science education at the district, regional, and state levels.

This year, during the Fall meeting, NCSLA recognized the achievements of Alisa Wickliff. Alisa Wickliff was described by her nominators as “dedicated,” “amazing,” “tireless,” “a true leader” and “a magnet for collaboration and academic accomplishment”.

In addition, Alisa has demonstrated many years of dedication to STEM education. She has developed and hosted STEM professional development opportunities and virtual field trips for students. She annually coordinates the Annual Science and Engineering Fair – the largest regional fair in North Carolina. She has served as president of the North Carolina Science Fair Foundation, and she also coordinates, each year, more than 20 teams of volunteers to provide hands-on, STEM focused activities for over 540 5th graders at the Catawba River STEM Festival.

Currently, Alisa serves of the board of the North Carolina Science Leadership Association and is the Associated Director of the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education at UNC Charlotte.
