Hello, my name is Tammy D. Lee and I am honored to be a part of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Science Leadership Association. This association has been an integral part of my professional development since 1999. Over these years, I have learned so much about science teaching and leadership. More importantly, I have had the opportunity to become friends and colleagues with the highest caliber of science leaders in North Carolina.
My own passion is elementary science. I am excited to start my position as an Assistant Professor in Elementary Science Education for the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education (MSITE) at East Carolina University this fall. In this position I plan to continue my work with the Elementary Science Concentration, which consists of 18 hours of science and science methods for elementary majors at East Carolina University. Also, I will be starting an induction model for the first graduates from the concentration entering the field of teaching. The model will involve emerging these beginning teachers in authentic field experiences with scientists and naturalists using a “systems thinking” approach. Teachers will use these experiences to create ecological learning progressions for their particular grade level. I am excited about learning from these projects and sharing results with my fellow colleagues as well as helping the association grow and strengthen in its mission.
