Buncombe County receives one million dollars for enhance fifth grade science education

Buncombe County Schools was one of the eleven recipients who received an Education and Workforce Innovation fund grant from the Office of the Governor in April 2014. With private matching and local funds, the program has a budget of 1.2 million dollars over five years. The main goal of the program in Buncombe County is to enrich science instruction in fifth grade and build a link in the STEM pipeline to middle school and onto high school. Through this funding, the county was able to hire a full time STEM coach to serve the schools with fifth grade, provide resources for the classroom, increase professional learning experiences in science and will start phasing Project Lead the Way into fifth grades this year. The STEM coach works with all elementary schools and will be involved with the North Carolina New Schools planning process with principals, lead elementary science teachers, and STEM leaders from across the county. This grant will enable and empower the teachers in BCS to be creative in preparing our students for college and careers.
