NCSLA members and extraordinary teachers Amanda Clapp and Lindsay Smith are two of the latest recipients of the prestigious Career Award for Science and Mathematics Teachers (CASMT) from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. According to the site for the award, this opportunity “provides $175,000 over five years and is available to North Carolina teachers who have an outstanding performance record in educating children and who demonstrate solid knowledge of STEM content. This award presents opportunities for professional development and collaboration with other master science and/or mathematics teachers who will help to ensure their success as teachers and their satisfaction with the field of teaching. The award offers schools and school districts the opportunity to fully develop and empower teachers as leaders in the field.”
Amanda Clapp currently teaches at the Catamount School, a lab school for innovative practices on the campus of Western Carolina University in Jackson County. Clapp currently teaches science and is involved in a myriad of initiatives. She is nationally board-certified, recently completed National Geographic educator certification, and is a Keenan Fellow who now helps plan PD for the program while serving as a STEMWork Facilitator. She plans to use her CASMT award to develop STEM Bridge, a program that connects teachers and students across different communities in North Carolina to collaboratively solve problems in the classroom.
Lindsay Smith currently teaches marine science and environmental science at Mooresville High School and is an alum of the NCSLA Fellows program (2016-2018 cohort). Before winning the CASMT award, Lindsay was also chosen as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator, participated in the NOAA Teacher at Sea program, and completed the NSF PolarTrec expedition in Antarctica. Smith will use her award to develop and implement a citizen science initiative both at her school and in the Mooresville City Schools district. She will use citizen science and service learning to create meaningful experiences where students in her district can connect to nature and be inspired to be change-makers in their community.
