The 2013 Herman and Emma Gatling Award was presented to Dr. Lisa Grable at the annual fall meeting held in Charlotte on November 6th, 2013. The Gatling Award for Outstanding Science Education Leadership in North Carolina goes to the person who has exemplified the high standards the Herman and Emma Gatling of Durham County set in their work and in their lives. This award recognizes the recipient as the outstanding science education leader in the state of North Carolina. Herman was given the first award posthumously in 1989. This award is generously sponsored by Carolina Biological Supply Company and was presented with the support of George Ross and Debbe Bingaman of Carolina.
Since 1975 Lisa has served science education for nearly four decades. In her distinguished career she has served as a physics and chemistry teacher, a program director to provide innovative science and technology education experiences to pre-service and in-service teachers, and a champion and advocate for all teachers and students, especially those in rural areas.
In her own words, "Educating science teachers in North Carolina is her passion and what inspires her is supporting teachers in equipping scientifically-literate students for the future". Through the years, Dr. Grable has worked closely with Dave and Chritine Vernier to influence the use of probeware in science classrooms. She has also published over 60 papers and presented at over 130 conferences to share her enthusiasm and expertise in science education.
Dr. Grable's contributions to science education include helping to launch the Science House at NC State University, the Friday Institute, and mentoring many Kenan Fellows. By chairing and serving on education, technology, physics, and other committees , her work has helped to bridge the gaps that exist among university, industry, and local community stakeholders in science education.
NCSLA congratulates Dr. Lisa Grable on her long and distinguished career in science education and her well deserved recognition as the winner of the 2013 Gatling Award for Outstanding Science Education Leadership in North Carolina.
