Happy New Year!!
Ringing in the New Year is cause for celebration, for spending time with friends and family, and for looking back.
Much has happened in NCSLA this past year. One of our long-standing members, Pat Shane, who has carried this organization throughout the years, stepped down as Executive Director. We are grateful for her unending devotion and dedication to this organization and has come to be a true friend to all of us. On the heels of this we welcomed our new Executive Director Christi Whitworth and are excited she has joined our team.
You might have been with us at our Spring Summit in Durham and/or our Fall Summit in Winston Salem where we highlighted STEM Ed with how to implement Problem Based Learning and Digital Learning strategies (including Virtual Reality Technology) into the science classroom setting. Thanks goes out to Alisa Wickliff and Manley Midgett for working so hard to make these membership meetings a success.
At the Fall Summit in Winston-Salem, we were proud to award Lisa Rhodes the Herman Gatling Award for Outstanding Science Leadership in North Carolina for her many years of dedication to NCSLA. Congratulations Lisa!
We have several SAVE THE DATES for 2020! We are embarking on a new year filled with energy as NCSLA launches its first PBL workshops coming this summer. NCSLA will host NCSLA members in Wilmington July 22 - 24 and in Asheville June 29 – July 1. I encourage you to support teachers to attend one of these three-day workshops and receive valuable PBL materials as well as CEUs. These workshops are offered to NCSLA members only so take advantage of this great opportunity. This is also a good time to recruit new members so spread the word.
Also, put on your calendars May 2, 2020 to attend our spring summit to be held at Horizons Unlimited in Salisbury. We look forward to digging deeper into how to implement science curriculum in the classroom hearing from DPI, science experts, and our sponsors as we collaborate and network with each other.
Lastly, if you are interested in becoming more involved with NCSLA I want to encourage you to apply to join a committee and actively promote science leadership in North Carolina. Your direct involvement will strengthen our organization. I am personally looking forward to seeing and working with you in 2020!
